Essential Elements of the ATSC Audio Signal

This presentation will cover a broad range of issues, including:

  • Personal observations regarding the state of audio quality today
  • The overarching goals of the AC-3 standard
  • Practical examples of things that can—and do—go wrong
  • The need for a solid measurement standard, proper equipment, and defined procedures
  • The need for better control of monitoring environments for DTV mixes
  • Demystify the role of metadata and explain the choices for producers and broadcasters
  • Explore the modern role of DRC

The first step in audio control is the original mix. This presentation will examine this all-important element in the program chain, proper monitoring, and understanding the proper use of dynamic range for DTV.

It’s not just the data…it’s also the metadata. Both elements are needed for a good audio presentation. Simple or more complex? What choices do broadcasters have and why?

The lip-sync issue has many facets. One of them—the receiver—is being examined by a study group of the Consumer Electronics Association. This presentation provides an update on the progress made to date.
