FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, Aug. 12, 2010 – The Dominican Republic has adopted the ATSC Digital Television Standard for digital terrestrial television broadcasting. The announcement to adopt the ATSC Standard was made by Dr. José Rafael Vargas, President of the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (INDOTEL).

"We look forward to working with our colleagues in the Dominican Republic as they implement digital television for the benefit of their citizens," said Mark Richer, ATSC President. "The ATSC suite of standards provides the government and broadcasters extraordinary flexibility and the ability to evolve with future marketplace requirements, while offering consumers a range of services and affordable receiver options."

The Standard was adopted by decree issued by Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernandez last week after the Board of Directors of INDOTEL, the regulatory body for telecommunications in the Dominican Republic, unanimously approved a report submitted by its technical staff recommending adoption of the ATSC Digital Television Standard. President Fernandez also announced the analog broadcast television switch-off will take place in September 2015.

ATSC DTV standards provide a wealth of applications, including high-definition television (HDTV), mobile digital television broadcasting, multiple simultaneous programs of standard-definition television (SDTV), multi-channel surround-sound digital audio, and a multitude of additional data broadcasting and interactive services. The commercial success of the standard is underscored by the hundreds of millions of ATSC receivers deployed in the Americas.

The ATSC Digital Television Standard has been adopted and deployed by hundreds of broadcasters in Canada, El Salvador, Mexico, the United States, South Korea and Honduras.

The Advanced Television Systems Committee is an international, non-profit organization developing voluntary standards for digital television. The ATSC member organizations represent the broadcast, broadcast equipment, motion picture, consumer electronics, computer, cable, satellite, and semiconductor industries. ATSC creates and fosters implementation of voluntary Standards, Recommended Practice and Technology Group Reports to advance terrestrial digital television broadcasting, and to facilitate interoperability with other media.
