WASHINGTON, D.C., March 11, 2009 - The Advanced Television Systems Committee is pleased to announce the country of El Salvador has adopted the ATSC Digital Television Standard for digital terrestrial television broadcasting. The decision in El Salvador, adopted April 22, was based on a technical report issued by the Telecommunications Bureau of SIGET on April 4, which in turn relied on recommendations issued in March 2008 by the Central American Regional Technical Commission of Telecommunications (COMTELCA) in a report "Basic Recommendations for the Implementation of Digital Television Broadcasting in Central America."
"We appreciate the decision to select the ATSC suite of Standards as the basis for digital television" said Mark Richer, ATSC President. "The ATSC DTV Standard will provide El Salvador with a high performance flexible platform that continues to evolve to meet the challenging demands of the market place". ATSC DTV standards provide a wealth of applications, including high-definition television (HDTV), multiple simultaneous programs of standard-definition television (SDTV), multi-channel surround-sound digital audio, and a multitude of data broadcasting and interactive services. The innovative ATSC Mobile DTV Standard is scheduled to be approved in the third quarter of this year.
The ATSC Digital Television Standard has been adopted and deployed in Canada, Honduras, Mexico, the United States and South Korea.
