Graham Jones

Graham Jones, Chair, planning Committee

Graham Jones is Director of Communications Engineering with the National Association of Broadcasters, where his work includes television standards development, advising on advanced television technologies, education, and helping to plan and run the annual NAB Broadcast Engineering Conference. Previously with Harris Corporation, he was Engineering Director for the Harris/PBS DTV Express digital television road show. Graham started his career with the British Broadcasting Corporation in London, where he was involved with studio planning and installation and was responsible for several projects related to the introduction of color television. Subsequently with International Broadcasting Consultants, he worked for nearly 20 years as a consultant to broadcasters in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Far East.

In addition to chairing the ATSC Planning Committee, Graham is a member of the Technology and Standards Group and the TSG/S6 specialist group on Video and Audio Coding. He was the chair of TSG/S1 specialist group responsible for producing the PMCP Standard A/76. He is also a member of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers technology committees D27 and S22, and chairs the SMPTE ad hoc groups on Lip Sync Issues and Image Formatting.

He authored the Focal Press book A Broadcast Engineering Tutorial for Non-Engineers and is an editor for the forthcoming 10th Edition of the NAB Engineering Handbook. He was also principal author of Digital Television Station and Network Implementation, published in the 2006 special edition of the Proceedings of the IEEE on Global Digital Television, for which he served on the ATSC board of editors.

Graham holds a degree in Physics from the University of Nottingham, England. He is a UK Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of SMPTE, and a member of the IEE, SBE, and the Royal Television Society. He is a manager and program chair of the SMPTE Washington DC Section and, in 2005, was elected a governor of SMPTE. In 2004, he was awarded the ATSC Bernard J. Lechner Outstanding Contributor award.
