Bill Miller

ABC

"A unique organization by design, ATSC brings together companies from all sectors of the television business, production, consumer, broadcast, cable and satellite, to focus on solutions for digital television. This diversity is ATSC's greatest strength."

Now General Manager of Digital Television Planning and Standards in ABC-TV’s Broadcast Operations and Engineering division, Miller has been with ABC since 1975, when he started in the company’s engineering laboratory as a vacation relief maintenance tech after earning his B.A. from Columbia University. He has held a number of positions in ABC’s technical, maintenance, and engineering departments during his almost thirty year tenure. Miller has been responsible for maintenance of the ABC Network’s central technical facilities in New York, and also designed and implemented the foundation of the network’s digital signal distribution system. Field operations and numerous special events have also benefited from his extensive experience. Miller was awarded an Emmy for his contributions to ABC’s coverage of the 1988 Winter Olympics.

Miller has been active in industry standards work on several fronts for many years. His service with ATSC started in 1986, when he assumed the role of Secretary of Technology Committee T1; over the intervening years, he has served as chairman of a number of subgroups, most recently T3S6, the Audio and Video Coding Specialist Group.  Of these positions, Miller says they “made life…interesting…at times.”

A stalwart of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) for over fifteen years, Miller chairs the organization’s Television Systems Technology Committee and actively participates in most of the Society’s other engineering committees, as well as serving on the Board of Editors of the SMPTE Journal. He was Engineering Vice-President of SMPTE from 1996 to 2001, during which time he represented SMPTE on the Executive Committee of the ATSC. A SMPTE Fellow, he was honored with the Society’s Progress Medal in 2002. Walt Disney himself, in 1940, is the only other individual from The Walt Disney Company to have received the medal.

In his free time, Miller can usually be found in his workshop designing and building loudspeakers, a hobby that combines his interests in music, electronics and woodworking. The proud father of Roberta and Zachary also enjoys quality time at home in Westchester County with his children and his wife, Ellen.
