For over 60 years, the United States and its millions of television viewers were well-served by an analog NTSC broadcast standard, originally adopted in 1941 and colorized in the 1950s. But, beginning in 1987 – spurred on by research and development taking place in other parts of the world – our government began to envision the potential of a greatly improved analog television system.

In this unprecedented election season, there’s a lot of voting going on this November. Certain ATSC members from Chicago like to say they “vote early and often.” I’m campaigning for all ATSC members to do the same. Members also are encouraged to vote in November on the slate of candidates for election to three-year terms on the ATSC Board of Directors to fill three vacant seats for board members whose terms expire at year-end.

The Advanced Television Systems Committee, Inc., is an international, non-profit organization developing voluntary standards and recommended practices for digital terrestrial broadcasting. ATSC member organizations represent the broadcast, broadcast equipment, motion picture, consumer electronics, computer, cable, satellite, and semiconductor industries. ATSC also develops digital terrestrial broadcasting implementation strategies and supports educational activities on ATSC standards.
