PRESIDENT’S MEMO: Cheers to 2020!

As we wrap up an amazing year for ATSC, we look ahead enthusiastically to the New Year with the expected rollout of ATSC 3.0 broadcasting in 60-plus markets across the United States.  ATSC – the authoritative industry voice on the standard’s capabilities – is looking forward to supporting the U.S. broadcast ecosystem in preparing for this next big commercial launch, which follows South Korea’s successful ATSC 3.0 broadcasting rollout, now in its third year.

This is a particularly exciting and gratifying time for all of us involved in the development of the suite of next-generation television standards collectively known as ATSC 3.0. CES® 2020 (January 7-10 in Las Vegas) will mark the official launch of NEXTGEN TV products for the consumer market in the U.S. to support the implementation of ATSC 3.0 broadcasting from coast to coast.  And ATSC will have a CES presence in the Las Vegas Convention Center for the first time ever! 

The ATSC booth will highlight NEXTGEN TV consumer products and services coming in the United States during 2020 against the backdrop of the market-by-market rollout of ATSC 3.0 broadcasting and demonstrations by some of our ATSC Platinum Sponsors. Throughout the show, ATSC experts will be on hand to offer insights and field questions, not just about the new consumer-facing offerings but also about B2B (business-to-business) opportunities to help raise awareness of the robust and growing ATSC 3.0 ecosystem.

At CES 2020, a number of consumer technology companies are expected to introduce the first ATSC 3.0 TVs for the U.S. market, and also perhaps some set-top boxes, smart antennas, gateways, dongles and more. Supporting these product launches is the Consumer Technology Association’s new NEXTGEN TV logo designed to help consumers identify products and services powered by ATSC 3.0.

In addition, ATSC will publish a guide to all things ATSC 3.0 in 2020, which will highlight where to find ATSC 3.0 products at the show, while educating attendees about the capabilities of our standard.  Our NEXTGEN TV Guide will be available onsite at the ATSC booth and online for easy reference for show attendees.  ATSC members and other stakeholders are invited to highlight their products and services in this booklet. In my first holiday message as ATSC President, I wish to pause to show appreciation – again thanking my predecessor Mark Richer for leading the organization so capably for 20 of our 35 years and congratulating him for being named a 2019 Giant of Broadcasting. Sincere thanks to the ATSC Board of Directors and staff for their support and encouragement, and especially to the hundreds of ATSC member volunteers who are the heart and soul of who we are and what we do.

As you gather with family and friends this Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice, Festivus, New Year’s or whatever you may celebrate, please join me in toasting a bright future together.  Cheers to ATSC 2020!
