ATSC Lays Foundation for Broadcasting’s Future

Planning Teams Formed to Consider 3DTV, Internet Enhanced Television and Next -Generation Broadcasting

ARLINGTON, Va, May 21, 2010 – The Advanced Television Systems Committee, Inc. (ATSC) yesterday announced plans to explore opportunities in three important areas: terrestrial broadcast delivery of 3D TV, next-generation television broadcasting systems and Internet-connected TV technologies.

“As we continue our efforts on the development of standards for Mobile DTV, Non-Real-Time (NRT) applications and ATSC 2.0 activities, we must also lay the foundation for future technologies and standards that will enable new capabilities and services for the broadcast television industry,” said ATSC President Mark Richer.

Announced at the 2010 ATSC Annual Meeting in Pentagon City, Va., the ATSC Board of Directors has formed planning teams to consider technical feasibility and market requirements in key future technology areas:

• The 3D TV Team (PT-1) will analyze and report on the likely benefits and limitations of a standard for terrestrial broadcast delivery of 3D TV. The team will be chaired by Craig Todd, Chief Technology Officer of Dolby Laboratories.
• The Next-Generation Broadcast Television Team (PT-2) will explore potential technologies to be used to define a future terrestrial broadcast digital television standard. PT-2 will be chaired by Jim Kutzner, Chief Engineer of PBS.
• The Internet Enhanced Television Team (PT-3) will consider the opportunities brought about by Internetconnected broadcast receivers. The team will be chaired by Rajan Mehta, Director, Digital Television Standards, Policy & Strategy, NBC Universal.

“With the addition of these new planning teams, the ATSC and its members will be well-positioned to address longer-term strategic goals while continuing our strong focus on immediate industry requirements,” said Wayne C. Luplow, Chairman of the ATSC Board of Directors. “These teams and their talented chairs reflect the ATSC’s strong commitment to fostering the ongoing evolution of DTV technology.”

The Advanced Television Systems Committee is an international, non-profit organization developing voluntary standards for digital television. The ATSC member organizations represent the broadcast, broadcast equipment, motion picture, consumer electronics, computer, cable, satellite, and semiconductor industries. ATSC creates and fosters implementation of voluntary Standards, Recommended Practice and Technology Group Reports to advance terrestrial digital television broadcasting, and to facilitate interoperability with other media.
