Lane Michaelsen

Group News Director
Sinclair Broadcast Group

Lane Michaelsen is a Group News Director for Sinclair, where he helps oversee news operations, storytelling strategy, and special projects across a network of content centers and stations nationwide. Over a career spanning more than four decades, Lane has built a reputation as an innovative visual storyteller, newsroom leader, and mentor who believes the best journalism is driven as by accountability, emotion, sound, and video.
Lane’s career began at WQAD in Moline, Illinois, running teleprompter before deciding he would rather be in the field. He took a pay cut to become a photographer — a move that shaped the rest of his career. A three-time NPPA Regional Photographer of the Year and two-time national runner-up, Lane became known for cinematic storytelling and his deep appreciation for natural sound. One colleague famously told him he “shoots with his ears,” which may be fitting since he is almost completely colorblind.

Along the way, Lane has earned numerous industry honors, including regional Emmy Awards, Murrow Awards, and film festival gold medals. He also served as Director of Photography at KARE-TV in Minneapolis during the station’s nationally recognized run as NPPA Station of the Year.

After his years behind the camera, Lane transitioned into leadership roles that included teaching at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies, serving as News Director in multiple markets, and holding corporate news executive positions with both Gannett and Sinclair. His career has included newsroom leadership in cities ranging from Little Rock and Washington, D.C., to Tampa, Miami, Cincinnati, and beyond.

Outside of work, Lane’s passions include travel, theme parks, triathlons, and ultramarathons — pursuits that satisfy the same sense of curiosity and endurance that have defined his career.
