President’s Memo: A Summer of Milestones

While many readers are in the “dog days of summer” in late August, we find ourselves reflecting on a season of remarkable progress and milestones for ATSC. The momentum behind ATSC’s standards work shows no signs of slowing. Members can dive into the latest technical developments in this month’s Standards Column.

ATSC’s vibrant presence at SET Expo 2025 in São Paulo, Brazil (August 19–21) provided us with the perfect stage for showcasing ATSC 3.0’s potential in Brazil and the region. At Latin America’s largest gathering of broadcast, media, and entertainment professionals, our booth featured dynamic demonstrations by Cleverlogic/ETRI, DigiCAP/MaruENG, ENENSYS Technologies, HCLTech, and MBC—highlighting innovative applications supporting Brazil’s next-generation “DTV+” broadcast system. We are also grateful to Cleverlogic and Kathrein for hosting well-attended networking receptions that added great energy to the event.

ATSC was proud to participate in the Caribbean Broadcasting Union’s Annual General Assembly, held August 18–20 in Bridgetown, Barbados. There, IT-7 Caribbean Implementation Chair Mark Corl and Vice-Chair Dr. Claire Grant engaged with over 80 regional broadcasters, fostering collaboration and furthering awareness of ATSC 3.0’s advantages for Caribbean markets.

This August we mark a transition within our leadership team. Jerry Whitaker, who has served ATSC with unwavering dedication for 25 years, is stepping back from his full-time role as Vice President of Standards Development. Jerry will continue to contribute part-time, and we are grateful for his tremendous impact on our organization and our community. I encourage you to read Jerry’s reflections in this issue—a thoughtful look back at a remarkable career.

Luiz Fausto officially joined ATSC as our new Vice President of Standards Development on August 4. Luiz held various engineering positions at TV Globo in Brazil since 2006. Most recently, he was Globo’s technology regulatory specialist and concluded his tenure as technical module chairman of the Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão Digital (SBTVD) Forum by delivering the TV 3.0 (DTV+) project technology selection recommendation to the Brazilian Ministry of Communications. Luiz brings deep expertise and a global perspective that will be instrumental as we continue to expand the reach and relevance of ATSC standards internationally.

As we head into the final quarter of the year, I’m energized by our community’s continued support, engagement, and innovation. Together, we’re moving from strength to strength—shaping the future of broadcasting, one milestone at a time.
