The 2024 ATSC Annual Members Meeting and NextGen Broadcast Conference wrapped up last month with a vibrant event in Washington D.C.
Celebrations!
There were several reasons to celebrate, as ATSC announced:
Fireworks!
Day Two of the conference opened with NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt updating attendees on NAB’s leadership role in the FCC “Future of TV Initiative.” This task force includes representatives from the broadcast, manufacturing and related media industries to negotiate the myriad issues related to the industry’s transition to ATSC 3.0, including a discussion of a sunset of ATSC 1.0.
Following Mr. LeGeyt’s keynote, I sat down with FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr for a conversation. (Queue the fireworks!). Commissioner Carr certainly created a buzz when he said, “we have to get to a point of a level regulatory playing field and increased investment. In broadcasting, we have to allow this flash cut to 3.0 by a date certain and forthrightly and we also need to really consider competition in D.C. around potentially an ‘incentive auction 2.0’ as well.” He continued by saying, when it comes to another auction, “it is important to start to have a conversation about whether there is interest both on the broadcast side and on the commercial wireless side. There’s no secret in D.C. that we are a little shy on spectrum right now when you look at the cupboards. We’ve moved a lot of spectrum in the last administration, not so much during this administration.” You can read more about this discussion here in a well-written article by Tom Butts of TVTechnology.
Thank you!
ATSC is grateful for the support of our members; without which we could not bring our industry together for networking, enlightened conversations, and valuable discussions every year. I would like to thank the following members for their hard work and contributions to our conference.

Next up for ATSC: SET Expo in São Paolo, Brazil
ATSC will be exhibiting at the SET Expo in São Paolo Brazil, August 20-22, 2024. ATSC members who will also be exhibiting include Ateme, Harmonic, Rohde & Schwarz, SM Facilities, Sony, Synamedia, Telos Alliance, Hitachi-Comark Communications, and more. The planning team has finalized our booth design, which will include an ATSC information desk, six kiosks, a catering bar for all day snacks and coffee and evening receptions, as well as a podium for sponsor presentations. I strongly encourage everyone to attend SET Expo. Brazil is home to some of the most advanced broadcasting innovations I’ve seen. To quote one of our board members after a trip to Brazil in March, “I should have brought my whole team. I learned so much!”
We hope to see you next month in Brazil!
