South Korea paved the road to ATSC 3.0, adopting its Ultra High-Definition (UHD) TV standard in 2016 and launching 4K ATSC 3.0 broadcasts in May 2017 that now reach more than 80% of the South Korean population. In the Caribbean region, Jamaica has launched ATSC 3.0 services across the nation, and Trinidad & Tobago has begun ATSC 3.0 deployment. India is exploring ATSC 3.0 for direct-to-mobile services and broadcast traffic offloading. In August 2025, Brazil adopted ATSC 3.0 technologies as the basis for its next-generation television system (branded “DTV+,” also known as TV 3.0). In Canada, Humber College is building its ATSC 3.0 5G lab, and Mexico is focused on distance education use cases.
In 2020, Brazil began a worldwide search for technologies to be used in its next-generation TV broadcasting system, called “TV 3.0.” After rigorous evaluation and comparative testing of multiple options, a Presidential Decree issued in 2025 officially defined the TV 3.0 standard (commercially marketed as “DTV+”), which adopts many elements of ATSC 3.0 technology, including its core physical and transport layers, along with advanced video, audio, captioning, and emergency alert systems that also incorporate ATSC 3.0 components.
Experimental DTV+ broadcasts are now on air in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Brasilia, and commercial service is targeted for launch ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
