ATSC 2017 sponsor PBS has been an enthusiastic supporter of ATSC television broadcast standards from the very beginning. As a proud ATSC member since 1984, PBS contributed to the development of ATSC 1.0 in the early 1990s and supported its adoption by the FCC in 1996, which ultimately paved the way for the broadcast industry’s switch from analog to digital transmission. PBS was active in developing the ATSC 2.0 enhancements and has participated extensively in the development and testing of the next-generation ATSC 3.0 standard, which holds significant promise for the future of both commercial and public broadcast media. The station-led PBS Engineering Technical Advisory Committee has recommended that all public television stations be prepared to adopt the standard. PBS is grateful for the opportunity to help develop the ATSC 3.0 standard and to play a role in helping realize its public service potential – from creating the world’s most advanced emergency alert network to enabling customized and targeted distance learning programs to offering specialized access and interactive enhancements for members.
