The ATSC is ushering in the New Year with a flurry of activity, more than two dozen technology group, specialist group, ad hoc group and board meetings – focused on the continuing evolution of Next Gen TV powered by ATSC 3.0. Lots of folks involved in ATSC are expected to be at CES and the ICCE in Las Vegas for this month, too.

ATSC 3.0 will officially transition from broadcast television industry buzzword into a commercial technology in 2018, or at least it will officially begin its journey toward consumers. When in November ’17 the FCC authorized the standard, huge ATSC 3.0 proponent and investor Sinclair Broadcast Group jumped right up and proclaimed its nationwide ambitions for the standards, which include enhanced audio and video quality for OTA broadcasts and interactive features enabled by the IP-based delivery.

When the books are closed on 2017, I think this milestone year will be seen as the inflection point for Next Gen TV powered by ATSC 3.0. Thanks to more than 10,000 ATSC member person-hours devoted to our work this year, I am proud that that by year-end the lion’s share of the suite of standards collectively known as ATSC 3.0 will be completed. We’ll be tying it up with a bow in early January as the few remaining pieces are wrapped up.
