2018 has been a landmark year – punctuated by the release of the ATSC 3.0 standard and initial deployments of Next Gen TV stations and services. The FCC’s rules took effect for voluntary implementation of Next Gen TV powered by ATSC 3.0. Leadership of the ATSC Technology Group transitioned to LG’s Madeleine Noland from Triveni Digital’s Rich Chernock. Following South Korea’s ATSC 3.0 launch, other international interest emerged in Brazil, India and China. Here’s a look back at five key milestones this year.

INTERNATIONAL UPDATE: Road to ATSC 3.0 Runs Through Asia

On the heels of ATSC 3.0’s road trip in South America this summer, the Road to ATSC 3.0 ran through Asia this fall. In November, the ATSC and TSDSI, India’s telecom standards development organization, co-hosted the Convergence of Broadcast and Broadband conference in New Delhi.  TSDSI Director General Pamela Kumar and ATSC President Mark Richer welcomed the delegates which included speakers from 11 ATSC Member companies.

ROAD TO ATSC 3.0 Phoenix Automotive Trial

Continuing on the Road to ATSC 3.0, broadcasters in Phoenix are planning an early 2019 trial of the mobile video capabilities of the new broadcast TV standard in concert with Avis Budget Group. “We’re on a mission to completely reinvent the customer experience through mobile apps, digital platforms and connected cars,” said Arthur Orduña, Avis Budget’s executive VP and chief innovation officer.

SOMEONE YOU SHOULD KNOW: ATSC Maven Ira Goldstone

Ira Goldstone is deeply embedded in the ATSC.   The Senior Executive Engineer for Fox Network Engineering and Operations began his work with the organization prior to the launch of ATSC 1.0 and served two terms on the ATSC Board of Directors. He was the Director of Engineers at KTLA in Los Angeles when 1.0 took flight.
