About 8.1 million Americans will buy TV antennas this year, according to a mid-year analysis by the Consumer Technology Association, reflecting the growing audience for over-the-air broadcast signals as more homes cut—or at least trim back—their cable subscriptions. This year’s estimates will mark a peak in antenna sales, which have been hovering just under the 8 million level for several years and which are expected to decline only slightly in the near future, according to CTA’s latest analysis.

As broadcasters drive down the Road to ATSC 3.0 – stations in Chicago and Santa Barbara are the latest to go on the air – they’re following the Rules of the Road, our suite of standards collectively known as ATSC 3.0. Also using our standards as their roadmap are manufacturers, large and small, of broadcast and consumer equipment supporting the early deployments from coast to coast.

Weigel Broadcasting has launched ATSC 3.0 operations in the Windy City under an experimental license from the FCC. Transmitting on UHF Channel 23, “Chicago 3.0” began on-air operations in September from the Willis Tower in downtown Chicago. [Locals still call the second-tallest building in the western hemisphere the Sears Tower.] Overall, the goal Weigel has set for the Next-Gen TV test is to explore the capabilities of 3.0 and the business opportunities it enables.

Early trials of Next Gen TV in Brazil show the promise of ATSC 3.0 for South America with historic 4K Ultra HD broadcasts of the 2018 World Cup. In Rio de Janeiro, live Next Gen TV broadcasts of World Cup soccer highlighted the superior picture and sound capabilities of ATSC 3.0, including 4K Ultra HD images and immersive Dolby Atmos sound.

Two legendary ATSC gurus will be honored in October by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. SMPTE is presenting its most prestigious award, the 2018 Progress Medal, to Dolby’s Craig Todd, ATSC board member and long-time ATSC volunteer leader and Merrill Weiss, long-time ATSC volunteer leader and Lechner Award honoree, will receive the 2018 Excellence in Standards Award “in recognition of more than four decades of participation and more than three decades of leadership in the development of SMPTE’s standards.”
