I was honored to address the Society of Broadcast Engineers annual awards dinner last month to discuss the “The Road Ahead” on our journey to Next Gen TV. Now, just a few weeks later, the cup overflows with ATSC 3.0 news.
It’s not just large broadcasters who are working to launch ATSC 3.0 signals. Family-owned News-Press & Gazette Company is investing to bring ATSC 3.0 broadcast TV to the nation’s 124th market in Santa Barbara, California.
Partners involved in the Phoenix Model Market just released results of Magid consumer research – jointly conducted with the Consumer Technology Association – that spoke to consumers and found “solid overall interest in and high likelihood to use” ATSC 3.0 Next Gen TV.

Next Gen TV powered by ATSC 3.0 will be broadly launched by individual broadcasters beginning in 2020, concurrent with the anticipated introduction of consumer TV products equipped to receive ATSC 3.0. Announcing their collaborative effort and support for the widespread introduction of ATSC 3.0 at the NAB New York show were top executives from Fox Television Stations, NBC Owned Stations Group, Nexstar Media Group, Pearl TV, Spectrum Co., TEGNA Inc., Telemundo Owned Stations Group and Univision.

In the Chat Room this month, THE STANDARD sat down with Chris Homer. He chairs the S34 Specialist Group on Applications and Presentation, which among other things deals with ATSC 3.0 standards related to accessibility for people with disabilities. The former member of the ATSC board of directors is the former Vice President of Operations and Engineering at PBS.

New national research shows that American consumers have exceptionally strong interest in the Next Gen TV powered by ATSC 3.0. In an update to a breakthrough 2017 national research study, the fall 2018 survey of more than 1,500 U.S. consumers ages 18-74, Magid Research found “solid overall interest in and high likelihood to use” the ATSC 3.0 Next Gen TV concept bringing together broadcast TV with broadband content.

Charles Lo is Principal Engineer in Qualcomm’s industry standards organization. He chairs S33-1, the ATSC specialist group that’s responsible for designing the signaling, delivery and error-correction aspects of ATSC 3.0. For example, S33-1 is where the decision to adopt an all-IP delivery system was first discussed and agreed upon. He’s also involved with the S33, S34, S36, S38 and TG3-6 groups.

About 8.1 million Americans will buy TV antennas this year, according to a mid-year analysis by the Consumer Technology Association, reflecting the growing audience for over-the-air broadcast signals as more homes cut—or at least trim back—their cable subscriptions. This year’s estimates will mark a peak in antenna sales, which have been hovering just under the 8 million level for several years and which are expected to decline only slightly in the near future, according to CTA’s latest analysis.
