ATSC spoke with Thomas Janner, Director of R&D Broadcast Products at Rohde & Schwarz.
Let’s talk to Thomas and get to know him better!
Give us a snapshot of what you do in your day to day.
I’m responsible for the system engineering of the R&S terrestrial transmitter products. As I’m working in the area of terrestrial broadcasting since 2001 I’m quite familiar with all of the existing broadcasting standards and have a good relationship with lots of customers in the regions.
How and why did you get involved with ATSC 3.0?
Me and my team were actively participating in the standardization work of ATSC 3.0 and we were the first company implementing ATSC 3.0 in terrestrial transmitter for the South Korean customers for the Olympics 2018.
Are you a member of any planning team(s) or implementation team(s) with ATSC?
I’m the chair of the new Exert Group on 3GPP. Beside that I’m following the progress of several planning and working teams.
What excites you most about the future of ATSC 3.0?
Definitely the opportunities to enhance broadcasting for other applications than TV to fixed TV sets. There is so much more like Mobile TV, Datacasting to vehicles or IOTs, Offloading to reduce load from mobile networks, … All of these to increase revenues for Broadcasters.
What are you currently reading?
I love reading regional German detective stories with a huge portion of rich humor. If you need some advice …
What is your favorite show to binge-watch?
None!!! Maybe there are better ones in other parts of the world but I hate most of the German ones.
Alternative career choice?
I need to be cautious as my employer might read this. I would have loved to be part of a start-up company but there was never the right idea or opportunity.
