TG1 PROGRESS REPORT: MOVING AHEAD WITH ATSC 2.0

ATSC 2.0

TG1’s significant progress continues on the ATSC 2.0 suite of standards. The draft ATSC 2.0 standard (being developed in specialist group S13) provides an overview and pointers to other standards, which together will define the overall ATSC 2.0 system.  These pointers will include:

• Interactivity (a new standard being developed in S13-2)
• Non-Real-Time content delivery
• Advanced Video codecs
• Advanced Audio codecs
• Security (which may be included in other documents)

The drafting work on the ATSC 2.0 suite should be completed in the coming months, no later than mid-2013.

M-EAS

The S4 and S4-7 specialist groups have completed the drafting of the Mobile EAS standard.  This work resulted in some revisions in A/153 Parts 1, 3 and 9, as well as a new A/153 Part 10.  A TG-1 ballot was issued for all revised and new parts, which recently passed with comments. The standard is likely to be completed and published prior to the NAB conference in April.

3D-TV

Work continues on the suite of 3D-TV standards, led by adoption of the first of several modes. Ultimately, the A/104 ATSC 3D-TV Terrestrial Broadcasting Standard will include six parts:

• Part 1 will be an overview and common technologies used in other parts and is expected to be proposed for TG1 ballot by the second quarter.
• Part 2: Service Compatible Hybrid Coding using Real-Time Delivery has been adopted and published.
• Part 3: Frame-Compatible has been approved for ballot as a Candidate Standard.
• Part 4: Service Compatible Hybrid Delivery 3D using Broadband or ATSC NRT (using broadband or NRT download for delivery additional view) is expected to be proposed for TG1 ballot by the second quarter/
• Part 5: Service Compatible 3D-TV using Main and Mobile Hybrid Delivery is in final development stages.
• Part 6: Independent Coded 3D-TV using Real-Time Delivery also is in development.

A/85

Our specialist groups (S6 and S6/3) have been working on revising A/85, the ATSC Recommended Practice: Techniques for Establishing and Maintaining Audio Loudness for Digital Television. Initial work led to the decision to reference BS.1770-3, and we continued to clarify other matters within the document. A TG-1 ballot on the revision passed with comments. Some comments were deemed substantive, requiring a short TG1 re-ballot, which should be finalized soon.
