ATSC members have ratified the Link Layer Protocol and Audio and Video Watermark Emission standards to be part of the ATSC 3.0 suite of 20 standards and recommended practices. At the same time, three new Proposed Standards and two new Candidate Standards are moving forward within TG3, the ATSC Technology Group charged with developing and documenting ATSC 3.0.

Tim Onders is the Director of Ecosystem Solutions for Dolby Laboratories. With an extensive background in broadcast and streaming media, he joined Dolby’s ATSC 3.0 team in early 2014. The one question that I’m asked most often (by the broadcasters and manufacturers, the FCC and the press, and especially my family) is: “When will the Next Gen TV standard be done?” As we enter a particularly busy fall for the ATSC, I am pleased to report that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.

The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) today announced today that the Physical Layer transmission system for ATSC 3.0 next-generation television broadcasting has been approved as a Final Standard, signaling that the standardization process for the entire ATSC 3.0 process is nearing completion. ATSC members approved the ATSC 3.0 Physical Layer Candidate Standard.
