Next Gen TV powered by ATSC 3.0 is likely to change today’s broadcast television industry in fundamental ways. Business modeling is examining Ultra HD video and immersive audio, HD “skinny bundles,” “post-Nielsen” audience measurement, addressable advertising, conditional access, hybrid networks, and mobile services to smartphones and connected cars.

A new organization called Public Media Group (PMG) has been launched with a goal to “transform broadcast technology infrastructure and ensure broadcasters are able to leverage the full power and revenue opportunities of Next Gen TV powered by ATSC 3.0.”

As a standards organization, ATSC needs to focus on the present and simultaneously lay the groundwork for the future.In the near term, ATSC is laser-focused on supporting successful commercial deployment of ATSC 3.0 in the U.S. We are honing the Standards as feedback from the field comes in. We are drafting Implementation Guides and Recommended Practices to help implementers navigate the Standards. We are supporting out-reach and education efforts underway in NAB, SMPTE, IEEE BTS and SBE. We are organizing multiple plugfests to assist interoperability testing. And we are supporting the consumer electronics industry’s efforts to offer ATSC 3.0 receivers as Next Gen TV broadcasts in the U.S. are launched in the coming months.

Industry veteran Adam Goldberg received the 2019 Bernard J. Lechner Outstanding Contributor Award, ATSC’s highest technical honor. The award presentation capped the two-day 2019 ATSC Next Gen TV Conference. Goldberg chairs the S36 Specialist Group on ATSC 3.0 Security, where he led the development of the A/360 ATSC 3.0 Security and Service Protection Standard. A/360 defines methodologies to secure content and data flows described in ATSC 3.0 specifications.

In the Chat Room this month, THE STANDARD sat down with Dr. Jong Kim, who chairs the ATSC Planning Team 5 (PT5) on ATSC 3.0 Automotive Applications. An ATSC Board member, he is Senior Vice President at LG Electronics and President of the Zenith R&D Lab, and a long-time player in advanced television going back to the ATSC 1.0 days. At the 2019 Next Gen TV Conference, we asked Dr. Kim to bring us up to date on what’s happening with ATSC 3.0 in the automotive arena.

Respected standards expert Luke Fay is the new Chairman of TG3, the ATSC Technology Group overseeing ATSC 3.0 Next Gen TV standards. He succeeds Madeleine Noland, who became ATSC President on May 15. Fay, senior manager of technical standards at Sony Home Entertainment & Sound Products – America, had been TG3 Vice Chair since its inception in 2011.
